INTRODUCTION TO SQL

The Department of Statistics organized a seminar on “Introduction to SQL” on January 6, 2025, conducted by Ms. Aleena Mary Praveen. The session aimed to provide participants with a basic understanding of SQL and its fundamental commands, emphasizing its role in managing and querying databases. Key SQL components, including DDL (Data Definition Language), DML (Data Manipulation Language), DCL (Data Control Language), and DQL (Data Query Language), were explained in detail. Practical examples illustrated commonly used SQL commands in real-world scenarios, making the session engaging and interactive. A hands-on approach and clear explanations ensured that attendees effectively grasped SQL fundamentals. Participants left with a strong foundation in SQL, making it a valuable session for beginners and paving the way for further exploration into advanced topics.

A TALK ON CAREER PATH WAYS

The Department of Statistics, in association with the Placement Drive at BCM College, organized “A Talk on Career Pathways” on November 12, 2024, to help students create professional and impactful resumes. The session covered key aspects of resume writing, including structure, formatting, career objectives, educational qualifications, work experience, technical and soft skills, and best practices for showcasing achievements. Students also learned to avoid common mistakes like spelling errors and unnecessary details. The program was highly successful, equipping students with a clear understanding of professional resume writing and boosting their confidence in applying for jobs and internships.

WORKSHOP ON SAS PROGRAMMING

The Department of Statistics conducted a two-day SAS workshop from November 20 to 21, 2024, led by Linsu V Mathew as a continuation of an earlier session. The workshop provided hands-on training in data analysis using SAS, covering essential topics like data access, exploration, preparation, analysis, and reporting. Participants learned SAS codes such as PROC MEANS, ODS, PROC SORT, and PROC PRINT, along with advanced features like vertical headings, labels, and dataset merging. The second day focused on advanced reporting, data manipulation, macro variables, and SQL concepts like joins and transposing datasets. Hands-on exercises reinforced learning, equipping participants with practical SAS skills for efficient data analysis and reporting.

ROAD TO RACE

On September 4, 2024, the Department of Statistics conducted a session titled “ROAD TO RACE”, led by Dr. Thomas Joseph, former Professor of Strategy at the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and founder of MyLQ. The program began at 9:30 AM with an introduction by Dr. Stephy Thomas, Principal of BCM College, who outlined the event’s purpose and schedule. A total of 26 participants, including 3 faculty members and 23 students, attended the session. The morning session focused on fundamental arithmetic operations, covering addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, percentages, HCF, and LCM, and lasted until 12:45 PM. The afternoon session covered more advanced topics, including weighted averages, ratios, and inverse proportion. The session was highly engaging and provided participants with valuable insights and practical learning experiences, strengthening their mathematical skills.

INTERNSHIP AT ICT ACADEMY OF KERALA

Students had the opportunity to undergo a one-month internship in Data Science at the ICT Academy of Kerala. The program included a week of hands-on training, covering various aspects of Data Science such as Machine Learning and Generative AI, followed by online sessions for the remaining duration. First-year and second-year students participated in the internship, which concluded with a final presentation at Technopark, Trivandrum, on March 22,2024. After the presentation, they also attended a session on Robotics and Data Science.

VYKHARI LECTURE SERIES

As part of the Vykhari Lecture Series, the Department of Statistics conducted a seminar on the spectral analysis of time series data for budding researchers. The seminar was delivered by Dr. Hareesh G, Scientist F at the Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, Kochi (DRDO). It was held on January 20, 2024, at S. Savio Hall. The session was highly interactive, and students from the Mathematics Department also participated. Additionally, the seminar provided students with valuable insights into career opportunities at DRDO.

WORKSHOP IN COLLABORATION WITH NIRMALA COLLEGE MUVATTUPUZHA

The Department of Statistics, in association with the Department of Statistics at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha, organized a workshop covering Google Looker Studio, Wolfram Mathematica, and hands-on practical sessions. The event took place on February 17, 2024, at 9:30 AM in the Language Lab.

NATIONAL STATISTICS DAY 2022

On June 29 every year National Statistics Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Prof.Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis a renowned and eminent statistician. This year, the main event of Statistics Day, 2022 is being organized through physical-cum-virtual mode.  The Department of Statistics celebrated National Statistics Day on June 29, 2022.   The theme of Statistics Day, 2022 is ‘Data for Sustainable Development’.

The event started with prayers at 1:30pm. Karthika PV from 1st PG Statistics delivered the welcome speech. The Head of the Department, Dr.Stephy Thomas delivered the presidential address.

The focus on the seminar was on the topic “Some univariate and multivariate time series models and its applications using R”. The resource person Dr.Nimitha John, Assistant Professor, Christ (Deemed to be University), Bangalore,  interacted with the students mentioning about the multivariate time series analysis using R. The youtube channel named ‘Statistics Department BCM College’ was launched by the resource person Dr.Nimitha John. The channel features a variety of videos on fundamental statistics subjects.

FRESHERS DAY

The Department of Statistics conducted Freshers Day for first year MSc Statistics students on 22nd December 2021. The programme was organized by second MSc students to welcome their juniors. The programme started at 2:00 pm. The Principal and Head of the Department Dr. Stephy Thomas welcomed all students and faculties. There were self intro sessions by first year students. Fun games and activities were given to the students to make the programme entertaining and memorable.

INTERNATIONAL WEBINAR SERIES, VYKHARI 2K21

Department of statistics organized webinar as part of international Webinar series VYKHARI 2K21 on September 28,2021 through Google meet. The webinar
focused on the topic “Transmuted Exponential Frechet Distribution-Models and Applications”. The programme started at 9:30 am with the welcome
address by Dr. Aswathy S Krishnan, Ass.Professor, Department of Statistics. The webinar was handled by Dr. A Vincent Raja, Senior Lecture in statistics, Statistical Data Analyst, Department of Mathematics, Physics and Statistics, University of Guyana.

The session dealt with transmuted distribution which is a class of distribution and some of the literature surveys were shown by the resource person. Vincent
sir taught us how we can formulate a model. He highlighted the general properties, simulation study, estimation procedure such as MLE etc. The topic is an emerging area of study and will be useful for students especially for those planning on research.

Almost 15 students participated in the webinar. After the talk there was an effective interactive session. Every student actively participated by asking their queries. The webinar wrapped up around 11 am.

CERTIFICATE COURSE ON PROGRAMMING PACKAGES IN R

Department of MSc. Statistics organized an online certificate course on “Programming packages in R” through Google Meet . This course was about 30 hours duration. The course mainly focused on R packages such as dplyr and ggplot. The programme started at 8:00 pm on 17 September 2021 with the welcome address by principal and head of the department of Statistics , Dr. Stephy Thomas. The session was handled by Mr. Rasin R.S ,Assistant professor, Department of Statistics, St. Thomas College, Thrissur. He started the course by providing a brief introduction to R programming and emphasized the use of dplyr package in R. The dplyr package provides various important functions that can be used for data manipulation.

The next session of the course was conducted on the days 21st,22nd of September and 18th of October 2021 . It was handled by Mr. Rakesh Krishnan Poduval, Project Manager at IMMO, Information Technology. He highlighted the use of ggplot2 which is a plotting package that provides helpful commands to create complex plots from data in a data frame. He also introduced R markdown as a format for writing reproducible and dynamic reports with R. About 11 students including teachers participated enthusiastically in the course. There was also a space for the students to clarify their doubts.

TEACHERS DAY

“Good Teachers are 5the reason why ordinary students dream to do extraordinary things…”.

Teachers day in India is celebrated on 5th September every year to commemorate the birth anniversary of Dr. S Radhakrishnan.

The Department of Statistics celebrated National Teachers Day on September, 2021. The programme was arranged as a fun session for the faculty members through google meet platform. There were games and activities including the participation of both teachers and students.Overall the programme was entertaining.

PANEL DISCUSSION

The department of Statistics and Mathematics conducted a panel discussion on the topic “Career Prospects in Statistics” on August 28, 2021.The meeting was conducted through online Google platform and it was started at 9 AM with a prayer song.

Ms. Dona Francis Deputy Director of National Sample Survey Office in Kolkata started the panel discussion with a brief introduction about ISS exam and also
shared strategy to the ISS exam and the resources, materials which she followed to achieve the feat.

Dr. Rahul T Assistant Adviser in Department of Statistics and Information Management in RBI spoke about the best career opportunities for Statistics and Mathematics students and information about the RBI, DSIM exam. He has also shared his experience with us.

Dr. Shiji K Assistant Professor of Sree Kerala Varma College Thrissur, talked about the academic carrier opportunities.

After the talk there was an effective interactive session. There were 25 participants in the meeting. Every student actively participated asking their queries and the meeting ended at 11:30 AM.

National Statistics Day 2021

A knowledge of Statistics is like a knowledge of foreign languages or of algebra. It may prove of use at any time under any circumstances.” On June 29 every year National Statistics Day is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Prof.Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis a renowned and eminent statistician. The Department of Statistics celebrated National Statistics Day on June 29, 2021.

The meeting was conducted through online Google platform and it was started at 10 AM with a prayer song. There was a 5 min presentation showing the role of statistics in day to day life.The meeting was inaugurated by Rev.Fr.Philmon Kalathara, Secretary Cooperate Educational Agency of Colleges, Archeparchy of Kottayam.

A webinar was conducted on the topic-“RESEARCH TECHNIQUES FOR STATISTICS USING ANALYTICS” by Ms. Teenu Maria James , currently a Researcher at University of Derby,England, also an alumni of our Department.About 68 students including teachers participated enthusiastically in the webinar. An interactive session was followed by it and students actively participated asking their queries.

As part of the program an intercollegiate Poster Designing Competition was held for all UG and PG students. The result of the competition was announced by Staff Coordinator Ms. Linsu V Mathew. There was an active participation of students from different colleges and the first prize was won by R.Njanapriya ,Devasom Board College, Thalayolaparambu , second place by Amritha Jacob , ST,Peters College ,Kolenchery, third by Thara George , BCM College Kotayam,fourth by Anna Serene Boby , Christ(Deemed to be University) and fifth prize by Keerthi S, SB College , Changanachery. All winners were awarded with cash prizes. The meeting ended at 12 PM by announcing the winners of first round quiz competition. The second round of quiz competition was held in the afternoon session.

The programs of the event included an online quiz competition “MasterMinds” on the virtual mode on 28th and 29th June 2021 for all UG and PG students. It was an individual event with two rounds which covered the basic knowledge of Statistics. First round was on 28 June 2021 at 6:00 pm to 6:20 pm conducted via Survey Heart. 27 students from various colleges participated enthusiastically and showcased their brilliance by rapidly answering the questions. Though some of the questions were very tricky, the students tried to answer them with confidence. Out of all participants 5 students were qualified for the final round. Final round was held on 29th June 2021 at 3:30 pm through Socrative , an interactive session and the quiz master was Staff Coordinator Dr. Aswathy S Krishnan. The students actively participated and Sooraj M, St.Peter’s College , Kolenchery got the first prize and Adithya Pradeep , Mahatma Gandhi college Iritty, Varsha Maharaja’s College Ernakulum , Elizabeth Joy, Mar Athanasius College Kothamangalam , Akshara S , BCM College Kottayam got the second, third, fourth and fifth prizes respectively. Cash prize was given to all honored winners of the quiz competition. Overall ,the quiz competition was a huge success.

E-certificates were given to all participants.

INTERNATIONAL COLLOQUIUM 2018

Department of Statistics organized online webinar on the topic “Introduction to Pandas in Python” on April 24, 2021 in Google Meet platform. The seminar focussed on Python libraries mainly Pandas. The programme started at 1:15 pm with the welcome address by Principal and Head of the Department Dr. Stephy Thomas. The resource person for the session was Miss Aleena Mary Praveen Post graduate in Data Analytics from St. Xavier College Mumbai. Currently doing internship at TCS Analytics Division.
