“When you educate a man, you educate an individual. When you educate a woman, you educate the whole family“.
When the great visionaries of the Knanaya Community envisioned the growth of the community and thereby contributed to the development of the society, this was the thought which inspired them. Motivated by this in 1931, the Management of the College started the St. Anne’s School exclusively for women education at Kottayam.
Inspired by the impact of education, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College popularly known as BCM College, Kottayan was established in the year 1955 by Mar Thomas Tharayil, who played a critical role in the development of education policy of State of Kerala, to fullfill the long cherished dream of his predecessor, Mar Alexander Chulaparambil.
Within a short span after inception, the college is delivering the motivation for its establishment fully. From a society symbolized by poverty, Kottayam rose to a city of NRI’s through the education of Women. The college served the platform for the nursing education of women in the locality.
From its humble beginning, the college made steady progress and now she is one of the foremost colleges in Kerala with sixteen under graduate courses – four in self-financing stream and 12 in aided stream, eight post graduate courses – three in aided and five in self financing stream, and home away from home for almost 2000 students.
The college was accredited with A+ Grade by NAAC with 3.46 CGPA , has made a steady progress from B+ grade in the previous assesment. The college is a DST supported college under the FIST programme. The College has been securing several ranks every academic year which certifies the academic excellence of the college.
The college has a well established procedure for extension activities. The college has adopted a tribal village at Pongampally near Munnar and is working towards the overall development of that area for the past 12 years. It is moment of pride that we have a very vibrant and innovative NSS unit. It received awards from various government departments and agencies for its flagship programme of organic farming at leased land near the proximity of the college. The unit has been organizing many programmes to create awareness about conservation of river, forest, our tradition among the students and in the nearby community.
Rather than just educating women, the college has been committed in moulding morally upright, socially committed women equipped to meet the challenges of the world. The college believes in complete empowering happens with experience. Hence while organizing programmes the college ensures that students are given enough involvement in planning, execution and delivery of its all programmes.
Though a compact campus, the campus is fully equipped with possibilities offered by advances in Information Technology with all classrooms equipped with LAN and WiFi and majority of class rooms being smart.
By 2024, our aim is to make our classrooms SMART SPACES.
