Merit day celebrations

 Department of Mathematics is proud to commemorate, encourage and inspire our meritorious students and exemplary alumnae  by celebrating merit day on 26 th October 2023 at Sr. Savio Hall, BCM College.

Math Magic

 Instilling a keen interest in Mathematics among school students, department of Mathematics incorporated activity based pedagogy “Math Magic” among students from St. Anns school on 6 th October 2023 at BCM College Auditorium.



“Aazhchavattom” was held on Monday 9th October 2023 under the auspices of the Departments of Mathematics and Statistics, BCM College, Kottayam. “Aazhchavattom” works by bringing non-toxic agricultural, homemade and handicraft products available in their homes to the college campus by staff and students.”Aazhchavattom” started at 8:30 am. Vegetables, fruits, handicrafts, homemade food items etc. were sold in various stalls. Students of each classes were in charge of each stall.The department was able to sell products worth Rs 11,949 through this”Aazhchavattom “.

In order to express students gratitude and appreciation towards incredible formal faculties, The Department of Mathematics organized Teachers day celebrations on September 7, 2023 at Sr. Savio Hall.

Onam celebrations

In the memories of homecoming king Mahabali, the harvest festival ” Onam ” was celebrated on 24th August 2023 by the Department of Mathematics.  The grand feast and the Onam games were the highlights of the celebration.

A lecture on Research in Mathematics – An overview

The Department of Mathematics, in collaboration with the IQAC and Research Development Cell, organized a significant event titled “A Lecture on Research in Mathematics – An Overview.” This informative session took place on June 27, 2023, commencing at 9:30 A.M.The lecture was conducted by esteemed mathematician Dr. Achu Aniyan. She is an alumna of BCM College Kottayam.

Association Inauguration and merit day celebrations

 Department of Mathematics  officially inaugurated the Mathematics Association Invicto  on 8 th June 2023 at Sr. Savio Hall, BCM College.Main guests of the programs were Prof. Dr. Mercy Mani and Prof. Valsa V. Samuel, who were the members of the senior teacher forum of our college. The prize distribution for the A+ and S holders was carried out by our teachers Prof. Dr. Mercy Mani and Prof. Valsa V. Samuel.


The department of mathematics is one of the most vibrant departments of BCM College. The degree course in mathematics was started in 1958 and M.Sc. mathematics in 1984 and was the first PG course in the college. The department has completed 60 years of excellence thus providing wide knowledge in pure and applied mathematics through various academic and co- curricular activities.

As per the motto of our department " “Seek, find and share truths of the universe through the eyes of a mathematician”. We are transforming the students to be persons with a mind of integrity.


Department of Mathematics BCM College, Kottayam organized an international Colloquium on the topic ‘Graph Theory’ on 29-11-2018. The lecture series were headed by 2 eminent resource persons -Dr. Chia Gek Ling( Professor of Lee Kong Chain faculty of engineering and science university Tunku Abdul Rahman) and Dr.AmbatVijayakumar (Professor department of Mathematics CUSAT ).The first session by Prof .Gek Ling gave insights regarding applications of Graph Theory in solving various mathematical problems. He interacted with the students as well. Later, the second section on applications of Graph Theory conducted by Prof.AmbatVijayakumar ( Emeritus Professor, CUSAT) was full of inspiration.


Year 2018-19 our department celebrated its diamond jubilee. The inauguration was on 11th of August 2018. Dr.George Mathew, Prof. Valsa V Samuel, Prof. Leelamma Philip together inugrated the function. It was a golden opportunity for all alumina of 60 years who had their studies in our department to cherish their memories.



As part Fibonacci day our department had conducted many programmes. The main highlight of this day was the chart exhibition. Our students had prepared charts related to Fibonnaci series ,which help the students in our college to know more about Fibonnaci series and its applications in real life.


As a part of Fibonacci day celebration department of mathematics organized a talk about Fibonacci for the students in our college. Prof Ann Johns our association in charge conducted the series.


As a part of Fibonacci day celebration department of mathematics conducted Fibonacci writing sequence competition.


Inaugurating Association 2018-2019 by Mr. Gopikrishnan C R.(IIT B Monash Fellow)

The Mathematics Department of BCM College, Kottayam with all its uniqueness and splendor had entered into its 60th year of excellence. As a glorious beginning to its whole activities for the year 2018-2019, the Department of Mathematics officially inaugurated the Mathematics Association SINCASTAS on 27th July 2018. The inauguration function was conducted in Sr. Savio Memorial Hall, of BCM College at 10am. The function was commenced with a prayer song, followed by the welcome speech by Amala Sebastian, the association secretary.


Alumni meet ANCORA 2K18 was conducted on 8th December 2018. Along with we celebrated the 60 years of our excellence of our department. This year the meet was conducted to all the previous batch students.


The department of Mathematics of Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College is celebrating its diamond jubilee. In this diamond jubilee year, we have introduced some new events in our fest. The fest was conducted for two days. 27th and 28th of July of the year 2018 with the name ‘SINCASTA MATH FIESTA 2K18’.

Rubik’s Cube Competition

As a part of our Math Fest SINCASTA 2K18 we organized Rubik’s cube competition for college students as well as for school students in 2 days. First day 27th of July College wise Rubik’s Cube Solving competition ‘CUBO RUBIKS’ was held. It was a thrilling experience for both participants and audience. 15 students from varies colleges were participated in the competition. The competition was held in two phases

Quiz for Higher secondary Students

As a part of SINCASTA 2K18, we had both school wise and college wise competitions. For the school wise competition, one of the events was quiz competition. Quiz competition was held in such a way that a team contains 2 members. Every school was allowed to send as much as team they can.

The aim of the quiz competition was to give something extra or something new to students. And it was a big success. Participants were happy and they were able to study new things. Quiz master was Prof. Liju Alex. 26 teams participated in this competition.


As a part of diamond jubilee celebration of mathematics department of BCM College Kottayam, a drawing competition has been conducted for high school and high secondary students, in accordance with the fest conducted by the department of mathematics SINCASTA 2K18.

On 28th of July Saturday at 10.30 am. Prof. Divya conducted all the procedures related to the competition. 17 contestants were there in the competition. Even though the competition was meant for high school students 5 students from UP section also participated in the competition


Sr. Lucia had been a dedicated teacher of department of mathematics and vice- principle of BCM College Kottayam. It was during her reign that mathematics department of BCM College has reached its heights. In memory her, department of mathematics, conducts Sr. Lucia Memorial Quiz Competition. It has been a prestigious event of department for 17 years. The year 2018 conduct 18th Sr. Lucia Memorial Quiz Competition. It was on the first day that is 27th of July. 37 teams from different colleges from all over Kerala participated.

Presentation Competition ‘PREZENTIT’

PREZENTIT was a power point presentation competition which has been conducting by the department for many years. PREZENTIT was an interesting competition and 15 contestants from different colleges in Kerala participated. The competition was judged by Mr. Sinu la,l M.G University research scholar and by Prof. Jaymi Sara Jacob associate professor Baselious College Kottayam.


Speed math – the problem solving competition was held on 27th July as a part of math fest SINCASTA 2K18. The competition was arranged for college students. The objective of the competition was supposed to improve the problem solving ability of students.


Various still models, Games, Working Models were exhibited there for the students to understand some new mathematical ideas. Some of them were very familiar for students. Around 10 models were exhibited there. Some of them are Fibonacci Rabbit Series, Triangular Spiral, 8 Point Star, Properties of Circle, Scatter Diagram, etc. The main attractions of this section are the Triangular Pyramid and the Rubik’s Cube.

Working Model  section mainly includes trigonometric ratios, octant, Pythagoras Theorem, Buffon’s Needle problem, Brachistochrome problem, Determination of п, transforming triangles, Real number house and so on


The Maryam Mirzakhani memorial debate competition was an inter departmental competition conducted by our department as a part of π- week celebration. Two students from each department could participate in it as a team. The topic for this competition for this year was “ Boogolathinte spanthanam kanakkilanu shariyo tettoo ?”  The competition was on 25th July 2018 at 1.30 pm Jobina Joseph and Riya Merin of Department of English had secure the first position and Grace M leghu and Uthara s of Department of sociology had secure the second position.


Prof.Anu Varghese of Dept of Mathematics got the chance to participate in international conference for mathematic (ICM) 2018 held at Brazil. ICM is the conference in which fields medals are announced. Fields medal is known as the Nobel price of mathematics. At this conference Prof. Anu Varghese got a chance to present a paper based on her PHD topic.


As a part of our fest students of third DC took an indicative to make paper pens. They were successful in making and selling around 300 pens in and outside the college. These pens were used for all the activities that we conducted. The theme of the imitative was aimed to avoid plastic and save nature. The amount collected from the cell was used for charity.


The Department of Mathematics with all its uniqueness and splendour had  entered into its 61 year of excellence. As a glorious beginning to its whole  activities for the year 2019-2020, Department of Mathematics officially  inaugurated the Mathematics Association EVOLUTES on August 30.


Mrs Jinu Motty (Alumni, Currently Teaching in St. Anne’s School, Kottayam),  the chief guest of the function, inaugurated the Mathematics Association  ‘EVOLUTES’ by lighting the lamp. It was a great pleasure for us to have a  graceful personality for our inaugural function.


As a part of National Mathematics Day, Department of Mathematics has arranged  a National Seminar on "Linear Algebra". The seminar was taken by Mr  Gopikrishnan - former faculty of Mathematics department of our college and  currently doing research in UK on Mathematics. It was a one hour talk where he  started the lecture with the basic concepts in Linear Algebra.


The Mathematics Department of BCM College in association with MG University  conducted a one day workshop on 28th February 2020 for the 1st year PG students  about Python, Dr. Sumesh S S (Assistant Prof. St. John’s College, Anchal) as its  resource person. The workshop aimed at how to use python language to write the programming  codes of the Numerical Methods and Interpolation in Mathematics.


The department celebrated pi week  from August 1 to August 2. An exhibition was held. Also Mariam Mirzakhani debate competition, pi value  writing competition and poster designing competition were held.


July 27, the death anniversary of the one who motivated the youth to shape their  dreams, the former President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam. The department of  mathematics conducted various competitions, as a tribute to his contribution  towards Science and Technology, on 25th and 26th July 2019.


Alumni meet ANCORA 2020 on October 2nd at Sr. Savio Hall. Prof. Liju Alex  was the convener of the alumni meet. This year the meet was conducted to all the previous batch students.  Our former HODs George Mathew, Valsa V Samuel, Leelamma Philip shared the old memories of college and also shared their teaching experience. Many of them shared their old memories.


In remembrance of Mariam Mirzakhani, department of Mathematics conducted interdepartmental Mariam Mirzakhani debate competition.

The topic for debate was “Is mathematics the queen of sciences?"

The competition was very much appreciated.


Mathematics fest of BCM College SINCASTA conducted on 10th January 2020. The auspicious occasion, inauguration of SINCASTA 2k19-20, had blessed by the presence of various dignitaries. Fest was inaugurated by Asst. Professor Dr. Bobby. P. Mathew, St. Thomas Pala


Sr. M Lucia Memorial Mathematical Quiz competition was conducted by the department of Mathematics of BCM College on 10th January 2020 as part of SINCASTA 2K20. 27 teams from different colleges of Kerala have participated in the 19th Sr.M Lucia Memorial mathematics quiz. Dr.Boby P Mathew, professor of St. Thomas college, Pala was the quiz master.


As part of our fest   SINCASTA 2k20 a quiz competition was conducted for the school students. Students from various school participated in the quiz. 


As part of our fest SINCASTA a grand exhibition was conducted in the college auditorium. Many students from various schools and colleges actively participated in it. The exhibition greatly helped the students to get a vast knowledge in mathematics and opened a new world of insight into the application of mathematics. 


  The competition ''Integration Bee" was conducted by our department for the first time. It was conducted for both school students and college students to encourage the mathematical skill and speed in every student for solving problem.  There were 29 participants from different schools and colleges.


The competition was conducted for the first time and it helped to find how the contestants are able to apply their creative ideas in maths.


As a part of the fest conducted on 10th January 2020 we organized presentation competition-Presentit. 12 contestants from different colleges participated. The topic for presentation was anything related to maths, according to one’s choice.


The competition was organized for school students to find the fastest problem solver and to improve their problem solving skills. 15 candidates represented different schools. The competition had two sections Numerical and Logical. Students actively participated.


 Math Treasure Hunt was conducted in order to find the best team who is able to challenge different application levels of maths. It helped the contestants to apply their mathematical skills and logical ability together to tackle the tasks given before them.


As part of lecture series Ms.Divya Mol K.T. took a session on the topic Fundamentals of Mathematics. Through this session she dealt with interrelationship and extension of each concepts in maths and mentioned about the importance of having basic knowledge in each subject.
