13 – March-2025- National science Day Celebration

The Department of Zoology & Research Development Cell of BCM College successfully organized the National Science Day Celebration on 13-03-2025 in collaboration with the Kerala Academy of Sciences. Students from all science departments attended the programme. The programme was inaugurated by Prof. Dr. K. V. Thomas, Principal, BCM College. Prof. Dr, Jayachandran, SBS, MGU, Kottayam, delivered the presidential address. It was followed by various lectures from eminent scientists.

25 – February-2025- Police Dog Squad Demonstration

The Department of Zoology successfully organized a  live demonstration of the Kottayam
Police Force K9 Canine Squad.  Mr. Premjimon K. V, SI, Police canine K9, squad and team
demonstrated it. The dog squad showcased their exceptional skills in crime detection,
obedience, and search-and-rescue operations. The demonstration was an eye opener for
attendees, offering a glimpse into the vital role of trained dogs in law enforcement.

25 – February-2025- Pawprints – Pet Exhibition

The Department of Zoology, in collaboration with the Department of Zoology, Govt. College, Kottayam, successfully organized a pet show as part of ‘PAW PRINTS,’ The Pet Fest. The enthusiastic participation of around 200 attendees, including students, faculty members, and the general public, made the event a resounding success. The pet exhibition featured a variety of pets, including ornamental fishes, exotic birds, and various breeds of dogs and cats. The exhibition attracted numerous pet enthusiasts and provided a platform for students to learn about the diversity of domesticated animals.

25 – February-2025- Workshop on Pet Care

The Department of Zoology, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) of
BCM College, Kottayam, successfully organized a workshop for  the second-semester undergraduate

students enrolled in the multidisciplinary course (MDC) ‘Pet Care Management’ under the four-
year FYUGP program of Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam. The event saw the enthusiastic

participation of around 100 attendees, including students and faculty members, making it a resounding success.
The event featured a series of training sessions led by renowned experts in pet
care, dog breeding, training, and grooming. The sessions were designed to provide participants
with both theoretical and practical knowledge about pet management.

Session 1: Dog Breeding and Research

❖ The first session was handled by Mr. Joseph Tom, a well-known researcher and
breeder. He has developed a new dog breed called the ‘Magical Double Helix
Dobermann’ and is also an expert in pigeon breeding, specifically the Mookee
breed. His insights into genetic advancements in breeding were highly
informative and appreciated by the audience.

Session 2: Dog Training

❖ The second session was conducted by Mr. Sanjayan K.P., a master trainer from
Suraksha Ka Academy, which has branches in Bangalore, Coimbatore, and
Ernakulam. He demonstrated various dog training techniques and highlighted the
importance of discipline and behavior conditioning in pet training. Participants
gained valuable insights into obedience training and handling techniques for
different breeds.

Session 3: Dog Grooming

❖ Mr. John Abraham led the third session from D Groomers, Chengannur. As a
professional pet groomer, he conducted a hands-on demonstration on grooming
techniques, hygiene maintenance, and common pet health concerns. His session
provided practical knowledge on proper coat care, nail trimming, and ear cleaning
for dogs.

13 & 14 – February-2025- National Seminar on
“Biodiversity Conservation: Sustaining Life, Preserving Ecosystems”

The Department of Zoology, BCM College, Kottayam, in association with the
Bhoomitra Sena Club and with financial support from the Kerala State
Biodiversity Board (KSBB), organized a two-day National seminar on
“Biodiversity Conservation: Sustaining Life, Preserving Ecosystems” on the 13th
and 14th of February 2025.
The seminar commenced with an inaugural function at 10:00 AM on the 13th of
February. The event began with a solemn prayer led by Anjali Maria Sabu and
Varsha Mol K.S., setting a reverent tone for the proceedings. The welcome
address was delivered by Ms. Priya Thomas, Head of the Department of Zoology,
who warmly greeted the dignitaries, participants, and attendees.
The official inauguration of the seminar was conducted by the Principal of BCM
College, Prof. Dr. Thomas K.V., who emphasized the critical need for biodiversity
conservation in the present ecological scenario. Following the inauguration, the
function was graced by felicitation addresses from distinguished guests. Dr.
Thomson Davis, District Coordinator, Kottayam District, KSBB, highlighted the
pivotal role of local conservation efforts, while Mr. Renjan Mathew Varghese,

State Director, WWF-Kerala, India, provided insights into global and national
biodiversity conservation strategies.

31- January-2025- Zoofest

ZOOFEST 2025 is an intercollegiate subject fest organized by Department of
Zoology in collaboration with Zoological Society of Kerala (ZSK) on 31/01/2025.
The program was aimed to provide a platform for zoology students to showcase
their skills in various areas of subject like research and presentations, taxonomy,
animal behavior studies, lab techniques, biodiversity conservation, interactive and
fun learning activities etc.
The program was inaugurated by Jagannadh V, President ZSK, Chaired by College
Principal Dr. Prof. KV Thomas. Dr. Vijo Kurien, Vice President ZSK, MS. Priya
Thomas, HOD Zoology, Programme Coordinator, Dr. Elezabeth Basil, Co
coordinators. Ms. Emi Mathew and Mr. Varun Jolly also contributed well to the
program success. A total of 85 participants from various colleges were participated
in different events conducted and BCM Zoology department won overall
championship and bagged the Zoofest Ever rolling trophy. The overall
championship in PG category has been secured by Alphonsa College, Pala.

04- October-2024- Debate Competition

In connection with the “National Wildlife Week” the Department of Zoology ‘TIERRA’ has
conducted an interdepartmental debate competition, on the topic “Co-existence or Conflict
Between Man And Animal”. The Program was conducted on 4th October 2024 at 1:00pm in
Room no. 302. The competition was judged by Mr Varun Jolly Assistant professor, and Ms.
Nijila Rose Oomen of Dept. of Zoology.

24- September-2024- Azhchavattom of Zoology Deaprtment

Azhchavattam is an innovative student entrepreneurship program being organized under BCM
College IEDC cell. The same was conducted by Tierra BCM Zoology association on 24th
September 2024 and 13th January 2025 from 8:30am to 9:30am. The program went well and
offered a market for items like homegrown vegetables and fruits, homemade snacks, sweets,
home-raised honey, dried seasonal catches, etc. The students also made decorative items and
scrunchies and arranged a mehandi corner for students and teachers.

11- September-2024- World Suicide Prevention Day

On World Suicide Prevention Day, observed on September 10, 2024, the Zoology Department of BCM College, Kottayam, organized a mime performance on the college patio to raise awareness about suicide prevention.

31- May-2021- ANTI-TOBACCO DAY

As part of observing World No Tobacco Day on 31 May 2021, the Department of Zoology conducted various Inter-departmental & Inter-collegiate Competitions. The competitions conducted were Doodle-Art making, poster designing and collage making on anti-tobacco theme. PowerPoint presentation competition was also conducted on the topic ‘Teenage Smoking’.

Environmental Week Competitions

As part of Environmental Day celebration on 5 June 2021, the Department of Zoology conducted multifarious Inter-departmental & Inter-collegiate Competitions throughout the week with the motive to ‘Save the Earth for a bright future’. The competitions included Photography contest on ‘Nature Around You’, Best Out of Waste competition, Poster designing, Caption Writing, PowerPoint presentation on the topic ‘Ever-expanding Consumerism’, Pencil Drawing and Elocution competition on the topic ‘Save Lakshadweep’.

 Environmental Day Video

As part of observing Environmental Day, the Department of Zoology produced a video on 06 June, 2021 with the active participation of department teachers, alumni, retired faculty and students. The video aims to promote awareness on the importance of conserving nature. The participants contributed videos doing environmental-friendly activities. The theme of the video was ‘’Nature observation, interpretation and restoration’’. The video was uploaded in YouTube and Instagram page of Zoology Department.

JUNE 13- INTERNATIONAL ALBINISM AWARENESS DAY

As part of observing the International Albinism Awareness Day on 13 June 2021, the Department of Zoology produced an awareness video about the challenges faced by people with albinism and the importance to look beyond complexion. The theme of the video was “Albinism is Beautiful”. The video was uploaded on YouTube, Instagram and Facebook page of the department.

As part of the World Refugee Day, the Department of Zoology conducted an online debate on 26 June 2021. The motion of the debate was “Pros and Cons of Migration”.

Webinar on Research Methodology

A webinar on research methodology was conducted on 6th august 2020. Ms. Aleena Elizabeth Cyril, research scholar at Nirmala College, Muvattupuzha was the resource person.

International Webinar

The department of zoology in association with IQAC of the college conducted an international webinar ‘on the role of indigenous people in environmental management’. Ms. Helina Jolly, Research fellow at the Institute for Resources Environment and Sustainability, University of British Columbia , Canada was the resource person. She is a Common Wealth Scholar, a National Geographic Explorer and has an M.Sc in Environmental Policy and Regulation from London School of Economics. The webinar was on the role of the indigenous community with special reference to kattunayakam community of wayanad in environmental sustainability. It was held on 19th June 2020.

Webinar on Landslides in Kerala

As part of world environment day lecture series, the department of Zoology in association with Break Through Science Society has conducted a webinar on land slides in Kerala on 17th June 2020. Dr. Sajin Kumar, Assistant professor, Department of Geology, University of Kerala was the resource person. He is also an adjunct Assistant professor, Michigan Technological University, USA. The talk covered the cause and different types of landslides citing various cases studies in Kerala.

Inter collegiate Online competitions

To celebrate world Environment day the department of Zoology in association with Break through Science Society have conducted intercollegiate online competitions on the need to conserve biodiversity.

Intra-departmental discusions

The department of zoology has conducted a discussion on ‘the Scenario of Man Animal conflict in Kerala ‘to observe World Environment day on 5th June 2020. The discussion focused on various reasons, strategies and mitigation measures to reduce the conflict and to make coexistence possible.
