JOURNALISM AND MASS COMMUNICATION
The Department of Sociology, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College, organized a Certificate Distribution Ceremony for the Journalism Certificate Course students on 25th September 2025 at the Sr. Savio Memorial Hall. The event celebrated the successful completion of the course by the students who had actively participated in the academic and practical sessions.
The programme began with a prayer song, followed by a welcome address by Ms. Alphonsa Kurian, Head of the Department of Sociology. Prof. Dr. Thomas K. V., Principal of BCM College, delivered the presidential address, appreciating the students’ commitment and the department’s initiative to promote skill-based learning.
The certificates were formally distributed by cheif sub editor Malaya manorama Ms. Remya binoy, in the presence of the faculty team. A total of 30 students received their certificates, who successfully completed the course.The event also featured reflections by student representatives and words of encouragement from the faculty. The vote of thanks was delivered by Ms. Josna jo, secretary of sociology department. The programme concluded with the national anthem and a group photograph, marking the end of a proud moment for both students and faculty.
GENEOLOGY , A STORY TELLING
On 24th September 2025, our class conducted a Genealogy Seminar as part of the Culture paper under the guidance of Alphonsa Miss. Each student was asked to trace the genealogical roots of their community and present it in the form of a story. This method of presentation, titled “Genealogy as Storytelling,” encouraged us to look beyond names and dates, and instead narrate our family histories as living stories filled with tradition, values, and cultural identity.
The seminar was both Insightful and engaging. Students shared diverse narratives—some reflecting migration stories, others emphasizing cultural preservation, and many highlighting the deep-rooted bonds of family and community life. Through storytelling, we realized that genealogy is not just about ancestry but about understanding how our past continues to shape our present. The session was appreciated for its creativity and depth, making it a memorable learning experience.
ETHNIC DAY
The Department of Sociology, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College, actively participated in the Ethnic Day celebrations held on 14th August 2025 at the College Auditorium, organized by Agira. The theme of the event was to showcase the diverse culture, traditions, and heritage of different Indian states.
Our team represented Uttar Pradesh, one of the most vibrant states of India known for its rich cultural traditions, colourful festivals, folk dances, and handicrafts. 15 of us participated as per the rules of the competition.
The journey was not without struggles. From arranging authentic costumes and practicing folk dances, to designing stalls and coordinating as a team amidst academic commitments, every step tested our dedication and perseverance. However, it was this spirit of teamwork and determination that made our efforts meaningful
Our presentation was well-received and appreciated by both the judges and the audience. As a result of our collective hard work, our team proudly secured the Second Prize in This achievement is not merely a prize but a recognition of the enthusiasm, unity, and commitment of our team. TALK ON GENDER AND FAMILY
Following the inauguration, the Department of Sociology hosted a seminar on the theme “Gender Roles, Family Dynamics, and Legal Systems”. The session was led by Adv. Sindhu Gopalakrishnan, Civil and Family Court, Kottayam, who served as the Chief Guest and keynote speaker.
The talk provided valuable Insights into the interconnections between gender roles, family structures, and the legal mechanisms that govern them. Adv. Sindhu highlighted pressing social issues related to gender inequalities, the changing nature of family relations, and the importance of legal awareness in ensuring justice and equality.
The seminar also encouraged meaningful Interaction, with students raising questions and engaging in discussions that enriched their understanding of the subject. The event proved to be highly informative and thought-provoking, leaving students with a deeper awareness of the sociological and legal dimensions of gender and family.
A total of 53 students from the department participated In the session, making it an intellectually enriching experience for all.
ASSOCIATION INAUGURATION
The Department of Sociology, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College, organized the Association Inauguration for the academic year 2025–26 on 13th August 2025 at Sr. Savio Memorial Hall. The event commenced with a prayer song, followed by the welcome address delivered by Ms. Alphonsa Kurian, Head of the Department of Sociology.
Prof. Dr. Thomas K. V., Principal of BCM College, delivered the Presidential Address, after which the formal inauguration was carried out by Adv. Sindhu Gopalakrishnan, Civil and Family Court, Kottayam. The inaugural ceremony also included the unveiling of the association logo and the introduction of the association name by Ms. Josna Jo, Association Secretary.
The programme featured a light music performance by Alakananda (1st ”C), the oath-taking ceremony of office bearers, and felicitations delivered by Dr. Reeja P. S., Assistant Professor, Department of Sociology. Ms. Akshaya Surendran, Faculty of the Department, felicitated the academic milestones of the 2024–25 batch. Ms. Adithya Bhasi, Vice President of the Association, proposed the vote of thanks.
The event concluded with the national anthem and a group photo session. A total of 53 students (27 + 26) actively participated in the programme, making the inauguration a memorable and inspiring beginning to the association’s activities for the year.
SEMINAR ON SOCIAL STIGMA AND SILENCE
On 25th July 2025, the Department of Sociology organized a seminar on “Social Stigma and Violence: Why Victims Don’t Report Intimate Partner Violence”, led by Ms. Madonna Mathew, Assistant Professor, Department of Forensic Science, Usha Martin University, Jharkhand, and an alumna of our department. Held from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM in Room No. 217, the session explored the social and psychological barriers that prevent victims from seeking justice, including fear, shame, and emotional trauma.
Ms. Madonna also highlighted the legal aspects of IPV, the relevance of marital rape laws, and the crucial role of forensic science in securing justice. She stressed the need to preserve evidence and report cases promptly—ideally within two days—so that proof remains admissible. “The law can only protect you if you give it the chance to,” she reminded students, offering valuable guidance on bridging emotional recovery with timely legal action.

Psychiatric Social Work (MPSW) at the prestigious Manipal Academy of Higher Education.
In a warm and engaging conversation, Ms. Hanna shared her journey after graduating from our department, offering valuable insights on academic and professional growth. She guided students through the application process for CUET (Common University Entrance Test), explaining effective preparation strategies and common pitfalls to avoid. She also shared practical tips for succeeding in interviews for higher education institutions, drawing from her own experience of gaining admission to Manipal Academy. Her detailed account of the interview process, the academic culture, and campus life at Manipal painted a clear and inspiring picture for students aspiring to similar paths.
The session was not merely Instructional but also carried the charm of a senior returning home to her juniors. Ms. Hanna encouraged the students to build confidence in their language and communication skills, reminding them that “knowledge opens doors, but how you express it keeps them open.” The atmosphere was lively and informal, allowing students to freely ask questions and discuss their concerns about future studies. SESSION ON MENTAL HEALTH
On 20th June 2025, the Department of Sociology organized an insightful mental health awareness session titled “Empowering the Minds” at Room No. 218. The resource person for the session was Ms. Nimisha J. Phillips, Consultant Psychologist at the Jeevani Centre for Well-Being, who also serves as the college counsellor under the Government of Kerala’s mental health initiative. The session was held from 8:45 AM to 10:10 AM and witnessed enthusiastic participation from students across the department, with nearly 55 attendees from the first and second year combined.
In her engaging talk, Ms. Nimisha emphasized the importance of mental wellbeing as the foundation for academic success and personal growth. She encouraged students to “treat mental health with the same seriousness as physical health” and reminded them that “asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.” Addressing common stressors among youth-such as academic pressure, social comparison, and uncertainty about the future-she provided practical strategies for resilience, including mindfulness practices, maintaining healthy boundaries, and nurturing supportive friendships. Through relatable examples and interactive discussions, she broke the stigma around seeking counselling, assuring students that “your mind deserves the same care you give to your body.” The session concluded with an open interaction, where students expressed their concerns and received guidance on how to build a balanced, healthy mind-set.
QUIZ COMPETITION
A quiz competition was conducted to commemorate Nelson Mandela International Day, celebrating the life, values, and legacy of one of the most influential leaders in history. It was coordinated by 3rd yrs of sociology. The event took place on 17th july at 1:45 PM in Room No. 217. The competition aimed to raise awareness about Nelson Mandela’s lifelong fight for justice, equality, and human rights. It was organized to encourage students to learn about his contributions to the anti-apartheid movement and his role as a global symbol of peace and reconciliation. Participants from various departments enthusiastically took part in the quiz. The quiz featured a single round centered on sociological aspects of Nelson Mandela’s life and impact.

The event was a great success, fostering not only healthy competition but also deep respect for Mandela’s enduring legacy. Overall, the quiz served as a meaningful tribute and helped instill the values of tolerance, freedom, and social responsibility among students.
ASSOCIATION ELECTION
The Association Election for the academic year 2025–2026 was held on 19th June 2025, from 10:25 AM to 11:25 AM, in Room No. 217. The election process was conducted in an organized and transparent manner under the supervision and guidance of our esteemed Head of the Department, Ms. Alphonsa Kurian, who presided over the proceedings with utmost diligence. The primary objective of the event was to elect the student representatives to the association for the upcoming academic year. The election included the posts of Vice President, Secretary, Joint Secretary, Treasurer, and Third DC Representatives. Candidates were nominated and voted for by the final-year students through a democratic process.
Following the election, the newly elected office bearers were announced: Adithya Bhasi as Vice President, Josna Jo as Secretary, Athira Lakshmi as Joint Secretary, Merlin James as Treasurer, and Kripa Thankachan along with Vaishnavi Gireeshkumar as the Third DC Representatives.

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF YOGA
In the month of June our department organized an interdepartmental poster making competition on Global Parents Day on 9th June, 2020.This competition had an active participation of students from different departments of the college. Around 25 students registered for the competition

LETTER WRITING COMPETITION
In accordance with international yoga day on 21st,June 2020, our students celebrated yoga day by practicing yoga and promoting yoga. Yoga as a form of exercise brings peace to the mind and body.

SR.MICHAEL DEBATE COMPETITION
The department of sociology conducted a offline interdepartmental debate on the topic “Trial by media needed or not” on 19th,March,2021. There was a heated discussion on this topic, both the sides ‘For’ and ‘Against’ had strong points.

LECTURE ON – INTRODUCTION TO QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
In association with St. Paul’s College kalamassery and BCM College kottayam, the Department of Sociology conducted a lecture on “Introduction to Qualitative Research” on 26th, August, 2020 by Dr. Rajesh, Associate fellow, IRTC kerala. This intercollegiate lecture had an active participation of 73 students.

WEBINAR ON – RECUPERATE FROM THE STIGMATIZATION OF TRANS COMMUNITY
The Department of Sociology in with association IQAC conducted a webinar on the topic “Recuperate from the stigmatization of trans community” on 19th October 2020 by Ms.Heidi Saadiya, Kerala’s first trans-woman journalist. We had an interactive session with questions posed by the students and she narrated her incidents and life story with us. Around 95 students had their active participation for this webinar at an intercollegiate level.

LECTURE ON -CASTE IN CONTEMPORARY INDIA
In association with St. Paul’s College kalamassery and BCM College Kottayam, the Department of Sociology conducted a lecture on “Caste in Contemporary India” on 27th, August, 2020 by Dr. Rajesh Komath Assistant Professor, MG University. This intercollegiate lecture had an active participation of 99 students.

WEBINAR – ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND INDIAN CONSTITUTION
The department of sociology organized a webinar series on the topic “Human Rights An The Indian Constitution” from 5th to 8th August,2020 by Dr.Jaisy Karingattil,Assistant professor at CSI College for legal studies. This webinar series saw an active participation of 91 students at intercollegiate level.

INTER COLLEGIATE ONLINE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION ON -WORLD WOMEN EQUALITY DAY
The department of sociology conducted an intercollegiate online photography on World Woman Equality Day. This intercollegiate competition had participants in and around Kottayam.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY- LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE.
The Department of Sociology conducted an intercollegiate competition named “let your light shine: to discover the light in you” through the online platform with regards to the international youth day. The competition was conducted in three rounds. This intercollegiate competition had an active participation of 50 students from several colleges.

INTER COLLEGE ONLINE RADIO JOCKEY COMPETITION
The department of sociology conducted an online RJ hunt competition under the leadership of the 2nd years of the department. The competition was judged by one among the famous RJs in Kerala Mr. Shambu. this session was followed by an interactive session by him. There were many students from several colleges to participate in this RJ Hunt.

ASSOCIATION INAUGURATION 2020-21
The 59th association of the department of Sociology was inaugurated on the 15th of September and named ESPERENZA. Esperenza is a Spanish word which means hope and expectation. We formed this association during the Covid Pandemic days, through an online platform

As part of international youth day, we organized our prestigious event in B C M College to find the Youth Icon of B C M. A series of competitions were arranged for the participants. Arnelit Philip from Economics Department was selected as the Youth Icon in B C M College. The prize was distributed on Independence day.

We got an amazing opportunity to attend a lecture session by Dr . J Devika ,a famous social critic and feminist, was conducted on the topic ‘Making of a Malayalee Woman’. The lecture threw light on the history of formation of Malayalee Women and the various challenges faced by them.

EXHIBITION
On 6th February we organised a chart exhibition of major sociologists in sociology in order to introduce sociologists’ and their major theoretical contributions, for students from various countries.

On September 4 we conducted a chart exhibition, which contained various theorists and theories of major proponders of sociology. It aimed to introduce sociology among other subjects to various students.

SEMINARS/WORKSHOPS
In accordance with reading day on June 19 our students organised seminar sessions in lower primary classes, on the topic importance of reading and its positive effects on life. Interactive sessions were held with the students to help them understand the importance of reading

SESSION ON LEGAL FRAMEWORK ON MARRIAGE
On 7th August 2025, the Department of Sociology hosted an interactive session on “Legal Framework in Marriage” led by Advocate Feba Abraham, Family Court Advocate and alumna of our college. The session, held from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM in Room No. 217, moved beyond a traditional lecture, with Advocate Feba creating a friendly, conversational atmosphere that encouraged open dialogue.
She discussed crucial legal aspects of marriage, including cohabitation, divorce procedures, custody of children, and the rights and responsibilities of spouses. Drawing from her professional experience, she shed light on how changing social norms are reshaping the family institution, sharing her view that “living together can sometimes be a healthier choice than entering into a marriage bound only by tradition.” Students actively participated, offering sociological perspectives while gaining valuable legal insights into the complexities of modern relationships.

In accordance with international yoga day on 21st,June 2020, our students celebrated yoga day by practicing yoga and promoting yoga. Yoga as a form of exercise brings peace to the mind and body.

SR.MICHAEL DEBATE COMPETITION
The department of sociology conducted a offline interdepartmental debate on the topic “Trial by media needed or not” on 19th,March,2021. There was a heated discussion on this topic, both the sides ‘For’ and ‘Against’ had strong points.

LECTURE ON – INTRODUCTION TO QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
In association with St. Paul’s College kalamassery and BCM College kottayam, the Department of Sociology conducted a lecture on “Introduction to Qualitative Research” on 26th, August, 2020 by Dr. Rajesh, Associate fellow, IRTC kerala. This intercollegiate lecture had an active participation of 73 students.

WEBINAR ON – RECUPERATE FROM THE STIGMATIZATION OF TRANS COMMUNITY
The Department of Sociology in with association IQAC conducted a webinar on the topic “Recuperate from the stigmatization of trans community” on 19th October 2020 by Ms.Heidi Saadiya, Kerala’s first trans-woman journalist. We had an interactive session with questions posed by the students and she narrated her incidents and life story with us. Around 95 students had their active participation for this webinar at an intercollegiate level.

LECTURE ON -CASTE IN CONTEMPORARY INDIA
In association with St. Paul’s College kalamassery and BCM College Kottayam, the Department of Sociology conducted a lecture on “Caste in Contemporary India” on 27th, August, 2020 by Dr. Rajesh Komath Assistant Professor, MG University. This intercollegiate lecture had an active participation of 99 students.

WEBINAR – ON HUMAN RIGHTS AND INDIAN CONSTITUTION
The department of sociology organized a webinar series on the topic “Human Rights An The Indian Constitution” from 5th to 8th August,2020 by Dr.Jaisy Karingattil,Assistant professor at CSI College for legal studies. This webinar series saw an active participation of 91 students at intercollegiate level.

INTER COLLEGIATE ONLINE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION ON -WORLD WOMEN EQUALITY DAY
The department of sociology conducted an intercollegiate online photography on World Woman Equality Day. This intercollegiate competition had participants in and around Kottayam.

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY- LET YOUR LIGHT SHINE.
The Department of Sociology conducted an intercollegiate competition named “let your light shine: to discover the light in you” through the online platform with regards to the international youth day. The competition was conducted in three rounds. This intercollegiate competition had an active participation of 50 students from several colleges.

INTER COLLEGE ONLINE RADIO JOCKEY COMPETITION
The department of sociology conducted an online RJ hunt competition under the leadership of the 2nd years of the department. The competition was judged by one among the famous RJs in Kerala Mr. Shambu. this session was followed by an interactive session by him. There were many students from several colleges to participate in this RJ Hunt.

ASSOCIATION INAUGURATION 2020-21
The 59th association of the department of Sociology was inaugurated on the 15th of September and named ESPERENZA. Esperenza is a Spanish word which means hope and expectation. We formed this association during the Covid Pandemic days, through an online platform

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH WEEK CELEBRATION : JUVENITUDE 2K19
As part of international youth day, we organized our prestigious event in B C M College to find the Youth Icon of B C M. A series of competitions were arranged for the participants. Arnelit Philip from Economics Department was selected as the Youth Icon in B C M College. The prize was distributed on Independence day.

ONLINE PHOTOGRAHY COMPETITION
In relation with World Photography Day, we conducted an online photography competition on the topic “SURVIVAL”.

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION
As part of ‘Nature Photography Day – June 15th’, Sociology Department conducted a nature photography competition.

ADVAYA organized the Alumni Meet on 17th August 2019.The program was inaugurated by our former HOD Sr. Michael. The program was really colorful and we made it more attractive with games and other programs.

In association with women’s cell , we conducted a seminar session on the topic “Healthy Motherhood : a need for better tomorrow” by Dr. Kurien Thomas (Rtd. Pediatrician , Medical College , Kottayam)

SELF DEFENCE CLASS : G . C . I Devika R of Five Kerala Girls Battalion NCC.
Our department organized a self – defence class for empowering the students. The class was conducted by G C I Devika R of 5 Kerala Girls Battalion NCC.

A TALK ON ‘MAKING OF A MALAYALEE WOMAN’ : J . DEVIKA
We got an amazing opportunity to attend a lecture session by Dr . J Devika ,a famous social critic and feminist, was conducted on the topic ‘Making of a Malayalee Woman’. The lecture threw light on the history of formation of Malayalee Women and the various challenges faced by them.

The Sociology Association of BCM College besides being active to the general ideals of college is equally dedicated to serve the college community and the society at large. EXHIBITION
On 6th February we organised a chart exhibition of major sociologists in sociology in order to introduce sociologists’ and their major theoretical contributions, for students from various countries.

On September 4 we conducted a chart exhibition, which contained various theorists and theories of major proponders of sociology. It aimed to introduce sociology among other subjects to various students.

SEMINARS/WORKSHOPS
In accordance with reading day on June 19 our students organised seminar sessions in lower primary classes, on the topic importance of reading and its positive effects on life. Interactive sessions were held with the students to help them understand the importance of reading

As part of yoga day on June 26 in association with NCC our students celebrated yoga day by practising yoga and promoting yoga. Yoga as a form of exercise brings peace to the mind and body. A number of students from various departments joined our celebration of yoga day.

The Sociology Association of BCM College besides being active to the general ideals of the college is equally dedicated to serve the college community and the society at large. The 56th association ‘Einheit’ which means unity was inaugurated on 14th July. On 5th June a general body of association was held and the office bearers were also selected
