ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES 2023-24

The Invited Lecture on the Future of Gig Economy: Transforming the Unorganized Sector in India, conducted on February 1, 2024, was a seminal event organised by the Department of Economics. Dr. Rinu Jose, the esteemed resource person, Assistant Professor and Head of KE College Mannanam, delivered an insightful discourse on the transformative potential of the gig economy. The lecture, under the coordination of Ms Lenny Elsa Varghese, attracted 45 participants keen on exploring the dynamics and implications of the gig economy in the Indian context.

In line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Department of Economics organised an extension activity focused on the urgent need to address hunger in our community. Titled ‘Zero Hunger—Need of the Hour,’ this initiative aimed to highlight food security’s economic aspects and sustainable development’s role in combating hunger. The event was held at Kottayam Municipality, where 16 individuals benefited from the food packet distribution.

The Department of Economics at Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College organised a unique productivity enhancement session at CMS LP School, focusing on equipping students with valuable skills to enhance their productivity. The event, held on February 16, 2024, was designed to integrate economic principles with practical strategies for effective time management and learning techniques. Ms. Shalini Thomas, the teacher coordinator, led the session to provide insights into how economic concepts can be applied in daily life to improve productivity.

The Talk on Cyber Issues, held on December 7, 2023, marked a crucial initiative by the Department of Economics to address contemporary challenges in the digital realm. The session was expertly facilitated by Adv. Vivek Mathew Varkey is the esteemed resource person, representing the District Legal Services Authority.

The Department of Economics took a giant step forward in the pursuit of knowledge and environmental awareness by organizing the much-awaited “AGATHA QUIZTIE” intercollegiate Quiz competition. This event, focused on the Green Revolution and the remarkable contributions of MS Swaminathan, was a memorable experience that brought together students, scholars, and enthusiasts to celebrate the vital intersection of agriculture, sustainability, and innovation.

The event, which took place on 26th October 2023,  commenced with great enthusiasm and was inaugurated by the honorable Sri. Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, MLA from Kottayam. His presence added an aura of prestige and showcased the importance of the competition in the community. His insightful words on the significance of sustainable agriculture and the role of our youth in this vital sector left everyone inspired.

Dr. Anu Susan Sam led a seminar to assist participants in writing and publishing research papers. The session covered various aspects of academic writing, including research methodologies, literature reviews, and manuscript preparation.

The Seminar on Writing and Publishing Research Papers, conducted on September 20, 2023, emerged as a pivotal event orchestrated by the Department of Economics. Dr. Anu Susan Sam, an assistant professor at KAU, a DAAD fellow, and Erasmus Mundus Fellow, spearheaded the seminar as a distinguished resource person. Under the coordination of Ms. Shalini Thomas, the seminar attracted 45 participants eager to enhance their research writing skills and navigate the intricacies of academic publishing.

The Seminar on Financial Literacy for Budding Entrepreneurs, held on August 10, 2023, was a pivotal event organised by the Department of Economics. Mrs. Anumol C A, a seasoned Financial Literacy Counselor from the Kerala State Cooperative Bank, was the resource person. The seminar sought to empower aspiring entrepreneurs with essential financial knowledge. Ms. Shalini Thomas convened the event, which attracted 50 participants eager to enhance their financial knowledge.

The final year students of the Economics Department embarked on an enriching field trip to Munnar, exploring key economic and ecological sites. The visit included the following highlights:

  1. Munnar Tea Factory: Students observed the intricate process of tea production, from plucking the leaves to the final packaging. The tour provided insights into the economic significance of tea plantations in the region, labor economics, and the global tea market.
  2. Eco Tourism at Munnar Top Station: At this scenic location, students learned about the sustainable tourism practices implemented to preserve Munnar’s natural beauty. Discussions covered the economic impact of eco-tourism on local communities and the balance between tourism and environmental conservation.
  3. Special Subjail, Devikulam: This visit offered a unique perspective on the socio-economic aspects of the penal system. Students engaged with local authorities to understand the economic challenges faced by inmates and the rehabilitation programs aimed at their reintegration into society.

This field trip was a valuable experiential learning opportunity, blending theoretical knowledge with real-world applications in the fields of production economics, sustainable development, and social welfare.

ALUMNI INTERACTION-23 rd December 2021

Arnelit Philip Mani of 2015-18 Economics batch alumni, now appointed as the Young Professional at ACCIO and a former CSR Executive at NTPC Ltd., has interacted with the students of Economics on 23rd December 2021. Arnelit talked about the career opportunities available for Economics students. Forty-one students have participated in the event.

The first Alumni Meet of the Economics department -Retrace for the academic year 2021-22 was held on Saturday, 2nd October 2021 at 11 AM via google meet. The retired teachers, Prof. Kunjammini C.K and Prof. Nima Jacob were present. Shalini Thomas and Deltta Kurian were among the current faculty members who attended the function. In the short meeting of 1hour duration, nearly 15 former students attended. Discussions were made regarding the second Alumni meet scheduled to be held in December.

The time of the meeting was 2:30 PM. The programme lasted for 1 hour.

STATE BUDGET EVALUATION-16 th June 2021

The Department of Economics, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College has organised the State Budget Evaluation on 16 th June, 2021-Tuesday through the platform of Google Meet. The programme started at 11.30 AM. Asst. Professor Linda George of the Department of Economics, St. Albert’s College, Ernakulam was the resource person.

SIGNIFICANT ACHIEVEMENT

Mumthas PA of 2018-21 BA Economics batch has secured the record for making the ‘biggest pin and thread portrait of Sushant Singh Rajput’ under India Book of Records 2022. She has also been titled the ‘Grand Master’ in the Asia Book of Records for the same achievement. Her ability to make portraits by using calligraphy has got broad media attention also.

COMPETITIONS ORGANISED BY THE DEPARTMENT

VIGYAN QUIZ COMPETITION

Every month the Economics Department organises a quiz competition based on the newspaper reports of that particular month. The competition based on the news of the month
of June was conducted on 4th July 2021. The July, August, September and October competitions were conducted on 30th July, 20th August, 28th September and 11th November
respectively.

GROUP DISCUSSION ON NATIONAL EDUCATION DAY

The Department of Economics, Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College organised a group discussion on Group Discussion on 'The contributions of Sir Maulana Abul Kalam Azad to the Education in India' on the occasion of National Education Day on 11th of November 2021. 53 students participated in the discussion. Significant contributions from Sir Maulana Abul Kalam Azad have been discussed by the students and they have realised the role of Sir Abul Kalam Azad in strengthening the Education system in India.

OCTOBER

COOKING RECIPE COMPETITION

The Department of Economics, Bishop Chulaparambil College organised a Cooking Recipe competition on the occasion of World Food Day on October 16th. The online competition was conducted on 20th October 2021. Mr Vinayak Vinod, a faculty at the Department of physics submitted the best recipe and he was selected as the winner.

DEBATE COMPETITION-DHWANI OCTOBER 2021

The History and Economics departments of Bishop Chulaparambil Memorial College jointly organised a Debate competition titled ‘Dhwani’ on 27th October 2021 at 3 PM in Room Number 401. The topic for the Competition was ‘Feminism in Family and the Society.

Lock Down Activities

To make the quarantine days effective, the students of Economics have made an attempt to familiarize the economic concepts that may come across in day to day life to general public. SEMINAR ON CHANGING PHASES OF ECONOMICS DISCIPLINE

A seminar on Changing Phases of Economics Discipline was organised by the department of Economics on 8th November 2018.Prof. Hemant Kumar, Principal of Ettumanoorappan College was the resource person. Through simple examples, the resource person explained the massive changes that had been taking place in the growth of the subject Economics. In the seminar he had asked certain Economics related questions and gifted books to those students who answered correctly.

CAREER AWARENESS CLASS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF LIBRARY SCIENCE

A Career Awareness Class on ‘the Importance of Library Science’ was held on 5th December, 2018 from 2PM onwards at room No:401. Sr. Joby SABS of Little Flower College was the resource person. She delivered an excellent session the need for learning library science and the future scope of the subject. Thirty Seven Economics students and faculty members attended the session.

CAREER AWARENESS CLASS-STAFF SELECTION COMMISSION EXAM

A career awareness class was arranged on Staff Selection Commission Exam by the department of Economics on 14th November 2018. The resource person was Jayaprabha J, former student of Economics department. In that more or less interactive session, students got an excellent opportunity to clarify several doubts.

ANNUAL LECTURE SERIES

An invited lecture entitled ‘Economics in Everyday life’ was held on 15-11-2018 from 2.00 PM to 4.00 PM at the Sr. Savio Seminar Hall of BCM College as part of the annual lecture series of Economics department. The resource person was Dr. T. T Michael, Former HOD, Dept. of Economics, Devamatha College Kuravilangad. He delivered a marvellous lecture on the relevance of Economics in our day today life. Around 75 Students and faculty members of the various departments attended the event.

With a view to understanding the different perspectives from which a research problem can be investigated, developing a research strategy and transforming it into a research design, Department of Economics organized a ‘One Day National Seminar on Research Design and Academic Writing- A New Perspective’ on 28-02-2019. The academic writing session discussed how to frame compelling questions, position an argument within a genuine academic debate, substantiate and organize claims, purposefully integrate a wide variety of sources, and revise for greater cogency and clarity. The Venue of the seminar was the BCM College Auditorium. The resource person was Dr. Santhosh Kumar S, Professor (Finance) Cochin University of Science and Technology. About 80 participants from various colleges attended the seminar. Mrs. Shalini Thomas (HOD) was the Convenor of the Seminar.

MUSIC ALBUM RELEASE OF GAYATHRI ARUN

Gayathri Arun of third year Economics has released a musical album about the BCM College. The Album was released by Prof Sabu D Mathew of St. Thomas College during the Onam celebration of the college. The musical album was uploaded on YouTube on 24th September 2017.

With a view to assessing the impact of demonetisation in our society, the department has organized a Chart Display on 8th November 2017(Wednesday). It has got media attention also.

 

TALK ON CAREER ADVANCEMENT AND JOB OPPORTUNITIES

On 2nd November 2017, a Talk on Career Advancement and Job Opportunities was arranged for the students. The resource person was Pearl Maxy Kattikkaran of Stella Maris College. Several interview preparation skills were explained by the resource person. During the interactive session students has got the opportunity to clarify their several doubts.

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION

The Christmas celebrations of Economics department was organized on 22nd December 2017. A cake was cut and distributed among the students. Also Carol competition, best hair competition, best smile competition and best dresser competition were conducted.

ALUMNI MEET

The first official alumni meet of Economics department was held on 5th August 2017(Saturday) at the college auditorium .Dr.Graceamma Mathew (former PSC member and HOD of Economics department) inaugurated the alumni association. The name of the alumni association is RETRACE.

SUMMARY REPORT –BOOK DISTRIBUTION

As part of Reading Day, the department of Economics organised a programme called ‘NINAVU’ under which more and 100 books were contributed to the Kottayam District Sub-jail on 19th July 2018. Jail Superintend P.Vijayan received the books from the College Principal Josephina Simon. ShaliniThomas, Dr. Resmi C.P and Sheeba Wilson were the Economics faculty who had attended the event. Fourteen Economics students were also participated.

SOCIO-ECONOMIC SURVEY

The department has conducted a socio-economic survey among the students to know the impact of Kerala floods on the life of the students.

SEMINAR ON NEED FOR WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN PATRIARCHAL SOCIETY

On 30th August 2016, Dr. Bindukumari, Superintend of District Hospital Kottayam delivered a Seminar on ‘Need for Women Empowerment in patriarchal society. She stressed the importance of achieving proper education at the right time education. According to the speaker financial independence is the most important thing for achieving empowerment.

ACADEMIC YEAR 2015-16

FRESHERS’ DAY

The new students who joined the department were warmly welcomed by the third year and second year students along with the teachers.Freshers day was conducted on 11th October 2015."Prayer is the key of the morning and the bolt of the evening". The day started with a prayer song by Ms. Gopika Raju of Ill D.C economics followed by the welcome speech by Ms.Sandhya Elizabeth Abraham. Ms.Bhavya Babu,Ms.Tincy Thomas were the MCs. Ms.Sneha Sebastian ( Ill D.C.) introduced the students on the basis of their resume and were given various tasks to perform. Eight students were selected from the whole lot based on their performance of the tasks. There were two rounds for the selection of the best fresher.The first round was 'performing talent' and second round was 'question session'. Prof .Shalini Thomas and Prof. Rithu Kuruvilla were the judges. The students performed to the best of their talents and creativity. Ms.Treesa Sebastian emerged as the best performer and was given 'Best Fresher Ever Rolling Trophy'.Prof. Shalini Thomas and Prof.Rithu Kuruvilla delivered the felicitation.Ms.Susmi Reji (Ill D.C) delivered the vote of thanks.

This programme enabled the students to create a good relationship among the students of the three batches and the teachers.This programme also enabled them to showcase their talents and abilities.

 

 

 

ALL KERALA INTERCOLLEGIATE POWERPOINT PRESENTATION COMPETITION

The Department of Economics has organised an All Kerala Intercollegiate PowerPoint Presentation Competition on 13th January 2016.The function was inaugurated by Sri.U.V.Jose,Hon Dist Collector ,Kottayam. The topic was on ‘Untapped Tourist Spots in Kerala’. Twenty three participants from different colleges in Kerala has participated in the competition. Thomas Jacob and Tibin Thomas of Marian College Kuttikkanam were the winners.

 

 

 

SEMINAR ON GREECE CRISIS

An invited talk on ‘Greece crisis- A matter of concern’ was held on 14-10-2015. The speaker was Dr. M. P Philip, Former HOD of Economics Department, SB College Changanasserry. The program was conducted in the College Auditorium. Around 70 Students and faculty members of the department attended the event.

TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATION

Economics department conducted teachers’ day celebration on 7th September 2015.Cake cutting ceremony was organized. Prof. Valsa M Kuriakose, Asst. Prof Shalini Thomas and Rithu Kuruvilla were the teachers who have attended the function.

 

 

 

EXTENSION ACTIVITY

FOOD PACKET DISTRIBUTION AT DISTRICT HOSPITAL

Economics department of BCM College has organised food packet distribution on 28th June at District Hospital Kottayam in collaboration with the NSS of BCM. The students of the three Economics classes brought freshly prepared food packets from home for the patients and bystanders at the hospital.

 

 

ACADEMIC YEAR 2014-15

INVITED TALK

An invited talk on ‘Importance of Learning Economics in the current scenario’ was held on 09- 10-2014. The speaker was Prof. George V Kallarackal, HOD of Economics Department, CMS College Kottayam. The program was conducted in the Sr. Savio Seminar Hall of BCM College. Around 60 Students and faculty members of the department attended the event.

 

 

 

TEACHERS’ DAY CELEBRATION ON SEPTEMBER 4th

A teacher is a person who provides education for students. A great teacher takes a hand, opens a mind and touches a heart. As a tribute to the teachers Economics department celebrated the teachers day on 4 September 2014 .Ms.Aswathy Ashokan of lll D.C,Ms.Sandhya Elizabeth Abraham of II D.C and Ms.Anjitha Krishnan of IDC felicitated the teachers. Gifts were given to the thrce teachers. The cakes were cut by the teachers and distributed to all. Prof.Nima Jacob addressed the gathering. A beautiful song was sung by the department choir team.

 

 

CHRISTMAS CELEBRATION -On 10th December 2014

Christmas is the day that holds all time together. The spirit of Christmas is the spirit of love, generosity and of goodness. Students celebrated their Christmas with the inmates of the charitable institution Abhayabhavan (Old Age Home) on 10th December 2014.Students organised several cultural programmes like dancing, singing etc. so entertain the inmates.

KUDUMBASREE UNITS VISIT

Students visited Kudumbasree unit at Channanikadu, Kottayam on 28th November, 2014 to create awareness about savings among housewives.
