HoD’s Message

For the last six decades, the department of Economics of BCM College has played a crucial role in imparting Economics knowledge to large number of young women. Guided by the motto ‘nurtured to empower’, the department creates a platform for the overall development of the budding economists. The department gives homely atmosphere to the students by providing individual care and attention. Most of the activities of the department are centred on society and environment. The department also keeps strong bond with old students and it conducts old students meet at least twice in a year.

Along with the systematic coverage of the prescribed syllabus, the department encourages industrial and field visits, organise lectures, arrange skill enhancement programmes etc., to make the students excel in career and life. National and State level workshops organise by the department enable the students to impart knowledge from eminent academicians and encounter people from different walks of life. The Social Responsibility Forum of the department is very active and we do commendable activities which are highly beneficial to the society. Every year, as a usual practice the department conduct Union and State budget evaluation. Economics is one of the most vibrant subjects in modern times and it offers large employment opportunities. Along with the traditional courses like Micro Economics, Macro Economics, International Economics etc., the applied economic courses like Quantitative Techniques, Econometrics and Mathematical Economics open the doors of research with statistical insight to the students. Our Economics programme provide training to students for pursuing careers in government services including IAS, IES and IFS, banking and finance, research consultancy, teaching, management and marketing fields.

Economics department, one among the oldest departments of the college, had its inception in 1959 with the introduction of the B.A Economics Degree Programme. Department offers UG programme in Economics which includes (a) common courses, (b) core courses, (c) complementary courses, (d) open course and (e) project. Psychology (second year) and History (first year) are the complementary courses. The entire course structure and syllabus is set by the MG University. Department also offers two certificate courses namely, Travel and Tourism and Entrepreneurship Development.

In accordance with the New Education Policy, the department offers Honours Degree program in Economics with Specialisation in Econometrics and Data Analysis.

Rev.Fr.Simon Kottoor was the founder head of the department. The eminent professors Mrs.Grace Andrews, Mrs.Ammini Ninan, Sr Flowerlit, Dr.Graceamma Mathew, Mrs.Kunjammini C.K, Mrs.Valsa M Kuriakose and Mrs.Nima Jacob gave leadership to the department.The department currently has 3 teachers and 138 students. Criteria for admission to the department is as per the rules and regulations put forth by MG University.

OBJECTIVES

The Economics department which focusses on the overall development of the students is guided by its motto ‘Nurtured to Empower’. The specific objectives of the department are in perfect unison with the vision and mission of the college. Objectives are;

  • Train the students to excel in career and life.

  • Mould morally conscious, socially committed and economically independent citizens.

  • Provide guidance to students to set their life goals.

  • Help the students to become ideal citizens.

STRATEGIES

With a view to accomplish high standards in matter of overall student development the department adopts the following strategies;

  • Systematic coverage of the prescribed syllabus.

  • Good functioning of tutorial system.

  • Provision of sufficient learning resources.In addition to ample collection of books in the college library, the department library itself contains huge collection of books covering areas of MicroEconomics, MacroEconomics, International Economics,Indian Economy,Kerala Economy,Development Economics, Quantitative Economics etc.,

  • Encourage slow learners.

  • Conduct various personality development programmes.

  • Proper functioning of S.R.F.E (Social Responsibility Forum of Economics department).

  • Special training to raise the research aptitude of the students.

  • Keep in touch with the old students of the department –name of the alumni association is Retrace.

  • Maintain an active P.T.A.
